Yes, the concept you speak of near the beginning of this post is known as cognitive dissonance. It plagues the globe and is forever-afflicting. I really enjoyed this post, thank you.

We are all cognitive misers.

Without spending a penny more, we could provide every man, woman, and child in this country with a check-up every 6 months, and still have money left over. IF insurance costs are deducted from the check-ups. Preventative care is being lost in shouting over who is going to pay for the whole shooting match, yet preventative care offers huge savings. How much does it cost when families use the Emergency Room as the family doctor, considering that an ER visit cost several times what an office visit would cost. What is being spent in the United States is several times what other countries spend per person to provide health care. Yet, health care in the United States is not that much different than what is provided in other countries, except for extremely expensive procedures, such as open heart surgery. Other countries try to minimize such procedures with preventative care. We also must ask ourselves if it is worth it to spend one hundred thousand dollars or more on such procedures when the patients are elderly, often near the end of their lives. That one hundred thousand dollars could be used to treat thousands of children for childhood illnesses, injuries, and birth defects.

I think both sides have taken essentially the same tactics. Labeling each other with invectives, giving their supporters a 'playbook', and attempting to use the media to their advantage. All of this is okay. It is okay because in America we have the right to freedom of speech, assembly and freedom of the press. These are rights that thousands have given their lives to protect.

The debate on health care which consumes nearly a fifth of the national economy and involves everyone is something that we should openly debate and understand the intended and unintended consequences of before we change an entire system.

It is important to provide better access, bend the cost curve so that health care is affordable (and not just through shifting costs by taxing), and improving the quality of the care delivered.

We are a country that leads the world in health care innovation. We have to zealously protect that aspect. No other country in the world is positioned to take our place if we take our eye off this important work.

A good question...a very good one indeed. I live in the UK which to all intents and purposes has been de-industrialised. Sure, there are a few foreign owned car plants and the like taking advantage of our supply of 'flexible' labour but this is a pale shadow of what we once had.

The neo-liberal experiment in social and economic engineering that started here in the UK in the late 70s is reaching its grisly conslusion. In the 80's the Thatcher government concluded that the UK could manage without industry and instead rely on high tech, financial services, various other services and last but by no means least, retail.

Well, we all know what happened to high finance! As for the debt fuelled consumer boom, that is collapsing as rising unemployment and a wave of pay cuts deliver a harsh reality check to those who thought the dream lifestyle could be purchased on the plastic.

As desperate UK retailers attempt to maintain profitability, they squeeze their supply chain. In turn the suppliers put the screws on their workers, imposing drastic pay cuts in a bid to remain competitive. As a result, the workers are forced to cut consumption or to trade down. So the pain for the retailers goes on and the whole cycle of cuts continues and triggers a self reinforcing downward spiral which will end...well, who knows where or how it will end! All I can say is that life will start to get very interesting...

I do believe that those homeowners who cannot afford to continue to make payments as a result of job loss or significant loss of income for another economic recession related reason should be offered the opportunity to have a mortgage adjustment. However, is it really reasonable that simply because you purchased your house, at what turned out to be a bad price, you should now have to pay less? When the market improves and your house is worth more the bank does not come asking that you increase the amount you now owe the bank to adjust for the higher value of your home. There is a stark difference between those who cannot pay and those who made bad investments buy purchasing a house during a boom time.
